Flu shot for 2016-2017
To our patients:
This year we will NOT be offering the live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), also known as the Flumist. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended earlier this summer that the flumist should not be used. This recommendation is based on a recent study showing that the flumist was only 3% effective against the flu over the last 3 years. Initial studies showed the vaccine to be as effective as the inactivate influenza vaccine (IIV), the flu shot. However, medicine is an ever evolving science and this recommendation highlights the importance for ongoing studies after a vaccine is made available. We always strive to use the most recent and up to date information and recommendations when making these decisions. Unfortunately the most recent information is telling us that the flumist is not effective at this time. We (as well as the AAP and ACIP) continue to recommend the flu shot (IIV) for all children and adolescents aged 6 months and older. We will have the flu shot available later this month.
